KIDS (ages 5-12)

Flamenco is a great tool for kids (of all ages) to learn focus, discipline, body awareness, music, and grace.  Inherently, flamenco breeds self-confidence and a great work ethic.  Though many may think that flamenco is too foreign or complex for young people, quite the opposite is true.  The unique and specific character of flamenco is easily identifiable for kids and many flourish studying the many forms of flamenco music that allow for limitless self-expression - which kids can't get enough of!

Flamenco del Pueblo Viejo offers classes and performance opportunities for children of all backgrounds and experience levels.  Instructors Mele and Jason Martinez are available for both private and semi-private classes as well as our ongoing group classes.  We also encourage families to take classes together and experience flamenco the way it was originally intended to be - a cultural and familial practice - that is both fun and challenging!  To schedule private lessons please email us at flamencodpv@gmail.com and we look forward to meeting you.

Our current group class schedule and fees follows:

Flamenco KIDS!
(Flamenco for boys and girls ages 5-12)
Focusing on rhythm, movement, and song. Kids will learn how to sing, dance, and do palmas in Tangos! Please have your kids come to class with hard-soled or character shoes/ boots.  Girls, please have hair tied back and a skirt.

OUR TEACHING PHILOSOPHY:

Our main goal in fostering this art form to others, an art given so freely to us, is to equip all those interested in learning flamenco with the most essential and fundamental tools to make their experience fulfilling and enjoyable. In addition, it is of the utmost importance to us as teachers to make sure that the art is preserved and presented with full respect and dignity, staying true to that which makes it flamenco. We equate baile (dance) with music. There can be no separation between them. As a result, understanding flamenco as music first is a priority. Consequently, our desire is that the student will learn the art of improvisation, which is the true nature of flamenco and many forms of music. Flamenco cante (song) is the heart and very essence of the art, and the guitar and dance should reflect the cante.

About the Teachers:

Both Jason and Mele Martinez studied with Master Flamenco artist Joaquin Encinias in a unique method of comprehensive flamenco curriculum for over 5 years and both were core dancers with Yjastros; The American Flamenco Repertory Company under director Joaquin Encinias. Jason and Mele were included in Festival Flamenco Internacional and the National Conservatory of Flamenco Arts faculty and also taught courses in flamenco at the University of New Mexico. Jason, a native of Albuquerque, NM, also studied with renowned flamenco artists Pablo Rodarte and Eva Encinias-Sandoval. Mele, a native of Tucson, AZ, began her first study of flamenco with instructors and artists Leticia Durazo, Olivia Rojo, and Martin Gaxiola. Both dancers have also studied in Sevilla, Spain with world-class artists including Juana Amaya, Matilde Coral, and Andres Marin. Most recently Mele and Jason were featured at the Fountain Theater in Los Angeles and Jason just completed an international tour of the Cayman Islands where he was a featured dancer and percussionist. With extensive stage and studio experience these two artists are both talented performers and instructors.
